barking

13 02 2008

Dogwise Publishing is pleased to announce the publication of their third book by Turid Rugaas. In Barking: The Sound of a Language, Turid turns her attention to one of the more fascinating (and sometimes irritating!) aspects of canine behavior. Turid explains that barking is just one of the many ways that dogs communicate with each other and with humans. When dogs bark they can be expressing several things including excitement, fear, and frustration. You can learn, through careful observation, what it is the dog is communicating. And with that knowledge – and the proper training techniques – you can minimize the negative impacts of barking (if indeed you find it negative – after all, dogs are dogs and they do bark!). Where
things get more interesting is when we inadvertently reinforce dogs for barking – what Turid calls learned barking. A dog who has learned he will be “rewarded” for barking (think being let outside after barking by the door) will continue to do so until he is taught some alternative behavior that will get him what he wants. We think anyone who wants to learn more about the subject of barking or who has dogs whose barking behavior is getting on their nerves will find this book a great resource.
