Jean Donaldson (CPDT) in October in Victoria BC

10 03 2008

Described as the most rational voice in dog training today, Jean not only “talks the talk” in her award-winning books and DVD but “walks the walk” as director of the San Francisco SPCA’s acclaimed Academy for Dog Trainers. Jean’s dogs and dogs she has trained have titles including Flyball Champion, Obedience Trial Champion, Utility Dog, Tracking Dog Excellent and Canine Good Citizen.

Jean’s background in science and her current studies towards a doctorate in evolutionary biology, give her a unique perspective on behaviour as an evolutionary adaptation.

Please join us for “Dog Behaviour – The Science Made Accessible”: the latest and most accurate information, made crystal clear and understandable but not all dumbed down.

· Demystification of Nature-Nurture questions (in English until you really get it)
· Genetics and domestication – the fascinating ways these impact behavior
· Evolution by Natural Selection – “The Single Best Idea Anybody Ever Had” (Daniel Dennett) and why it is the key to all (every last bit of…) behavior
· The Four “F”s of animal behavior and their specifics in dogs
· Thinking like an evolutionary biologist about fear and aggression
· What the heck is play?  Refereeing play
· What are dogs’ strong cognitive domains, or brain-power modules
· Ask your Most Burning Question
· Oodles of practical pointers along the way
· Oodles of fun
· Oodles of head-exploding information

Although this seminar has been approved for 13 CEU credits by the Certification Council of Pet Dog Trainers, the subject matter will appeal to everyone interested in knowing what makes dogs tick.

Don’t miss this opportunity to learn from a Master!  Seating is Limited! Bring a friend and please pass this on to others who may be interested!

Jean Donaldson, a household name for anyone who reads her award winning column in Dogs in Canada, is a renowned animal behaviourist who has been participating in dog sports and putting numerous titles on her dogs since 1975. Undoubtedly one of her favourite pastimes is flyball with her rescue Chow Buffy, the only Chow registered with
the North American Flyball Association.

With degrees in Music and Comparative Psychology, Jean has put her talents to good use as an award winning author of several books including CULTURE CLASH, MINE!, FIGHT!, BEHAVE! and a DVD on basic obedience: PERFECT PAWS IN FIVE DAYS.
Since moving to San Francisco from Canada, Jean founded the San Francisco SPCA Academy of Dog Trainers (aka the ‘Harvard’ for dog trainers) where she instructs while pursuing a doctorate in evolutionary biology.

Jean is looking forward to coming to Canada, presenting NEW material at this seminar which is aimed at both owners and trainers.
